Stem Cell Therapy for Dogs and Cats Is Innovative at Stafford Veterinary Hospital – By MARIA SCANDALE – The SandPaper

Stafford Township, NJ Stem cell therapy is an incredible process for healing damaged tissue, so it seems remarkable that it is availablefor petsright here in Manahawkin. Stafford Veterinary Hospital, at 211 North Main St., began offering the advanced treatment in 2019, under the direction of Michael Pride, medical director at the facility.

There, stem cell therapy is most commonly applied to osteoarthritis, but can also be used in dogs suffering from hip dysplasia and ligament and cartilage injuries, as well as mobility ailments and some chronic inflammatory issues such as inflammatory bowel disease and chronic kidney disease, which is common in cats.

Stem cell therapy is actually the only thing that can help to reverse the process of arthritis, Pride said. Everything else is a Band-Aid.

This process can actually help to rebuild cartilage and really reduce inflammation without the need of using aspirin-type medications, Pride said. Its a newer technology that we can use to avoid chronic use of medications, which might actually be detrimental in the long term for the liver or kidneys.

Stem cell therapy treats the source of the problem by offering the ability to replace damaged cells with new ones, instructs the website staffordvet.com.

Stem cells are powerful healing cells in the pets body that can become other types of cells. For example, in the case of arthritis, stem cells can become new cartilage cells and have natural anti-inflammatory properties, thus reducing pain and increasing mobility.

The stem cells are your primary structural cell for all other cells in the body; they can differentiate into almost any other cell, explained Pride. Were processing it down into that primordial stem cell; were activating it, and were injecting it into where it needs to be, and it just starts taking on the characteristics of the cells around it.

Table-top machines from MediVet Biologics are the first Adipose Stem Cell therapy kits for in-clinic use, a major advancement. Stem cell therapy for animals has been commercially available since 2004. MediVet pioneered in-clinic treatment options around 2010.

Pride believes Stafford Veterinary Hospital offers the only such treatment in the immediate area; another is in Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County.

Were always trying to figure out different ways to help the patient without hurting them, he said while petting a kitten that had been a patient for another type of treatment.

As stem cell therapy is more in the news regarding humans, a pet owners first question might be where the stem cells come from that are used in the process. The answer: from fat tissue of the pet itself, extracted and processed the same day.

As the therapy has been refined in the last decade, it has actually started to become a lot easier, more cost-effective more recently, said Pride, since weve been able to process fat tissue instead of actually getting bone marrow.

Fat tissue actually has a much higher concentration of adult stem cells than bone marrow does, so its less painful for the patient, they heal a lot easier, and we dont have to process it in a different facility.

Everything comes from the animal, and we give it back to the animal. Nothing comes from another animal. We dont have to worry about them rejecting the sample; its their own tissue, and were giving it back to them.

The pet typically goes home the same day after about eight hours. First, X-rays and a consultation with the veterinarian can determine whether the pet is a candidate for the treatment.

A pet owner may not even know that their animal has arthritis.

Cats have a lot of inflammatory issues that they tend to be very good at hiding, said Pride. A lot of people dont realize that they have arthritis. They think, oh, my cats just getting older; hes not jumping as much; hes not as strong; hes just sleeping most of the day, but actually he has arthritis. Its very difficult to diagnose in cats. A lot of times you end up having to do X-rays to find where the arthritic joints happen to be.

An inch-and-a-half incision is the minor surgery that harvests the fat tissue from the belly while the pet is anesthetized. For a cat, about 20 gramsare extracted. For a large dog, about 40 gramsare needed. While the pet is recovering from the incision surgery, the veterinary hospital is processing the sample. When the sample is ready, the pet is sedated because we then have to give them the joint injections. Then we can reverse the sedation, and they go home.

We asked the doctor if the process always works. He gave the example that on average, a dog such as a boxer that was hobbled is now able to walk without seeming like its painful. In an extreme positive case, a dog that had been barely walking might be bouncing all over the place in two months.

It doesnt always work to the extent that we would love it to, but we usually notice that there is a positive effect from it, Pride remarked. Every patient will be different in what they experience.

For the same reason that everyones situation is going to be different, cost of treatment was not given for this story.

It generally takes about 30 to 60 days for relief to show, the veterinarian said, and the animals progress will be monitored.

On average, results last about 18 months to two years before more stem cells might have to be injected. The procedure takes about an hour.

The nice thing is once we collect those stem cells (from the first procedure), we can bank the leftovers they are cryogenically stored at MediVet corporate headquarters in Kentucky and we dont have to go through the initial anesthetic surgery, said Pride.

Stem cell therapy is one of several innovative modalities available at Stafford Veterinary Hospital. Laser therapy, acupuncture and holistic medicine are others. Care for exotic pets is available, as is emergency pet care.

Visit the website staffordvet.com or call 609-597-7571 for more information on general and specialized services, including: vaccinations, microchipping, spayingand neutering, dental care, wellness exams, dermatology, gastrology, oncology, opthalmology, cardiology, soft-tissue surgery, ultrasound, radiography, nutrition, parasite control, boarding, laborand delivery, end-of-life care, and cremation.

Stafford Veterinary Hospital has been in business since 1965, founded by Dr. John Hauge. Today, five highly skilled veterinarians are on staff, and a satellite, Tuckerton Veterinary Clinic, is at 500 North Green St. in Tuckerton.

Pride has been medical director at Stafford Veterinary Hospital since 2008. He attended Rutgers University, then earned his Veterinary of Medicine degree at Oklahoma State University.

The mild-mannered doctor feels a great rewardfrom treating animals that cant speak for themselves when they feel bad.

These guys, theyre always thankful; you can see what they think, he said of treated pets. The turnaround in their attitude, the turnaround in their ability to be more comfortable, you can see it in their faces; you can see it in their actions. You learn to read animals over time.

Its knowing that were helping those who cant help themselves, he added, and you can see it in them; thats the most gratifying.

What is Mantle Cell Lymphoma and How Is It Treated? – Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Last Updated on January 10, 2020

Medically reviewed by Ann S. LaCasce, MD, MMSc

Mantle cell lymphoma is a rare, often aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), a cancer that involves white blood cells known as lymphocytes, which help protect the body from disease. It is named for its origins in the mantle zone a ring of cells within the lymph nodes where B cells (a type of lymphocyte) grow and take on specialized functions. It comprises about 6% of all cases of NHL, usually arises during an individuals early 60s, and is more common in men than women.

The most common symptoms of mantle cell lymphoma include:

At the time of diagnosis, nearly all patients have disease that has spread beyond its initial site.

For most patients, the cause of the disease is unknown, but rates are higher among farmers and people from rural areas.

Itoccurs when B lymphocytes acquire genetic mutations that alter their functionand growth. One such abnormality, found in 90% of cases, causes B lymphocytesto overproduce cyclin D1, a protein that spurs the cells growth. Othermutations can interfere with B cells ability to produce infection-fightingantibodies, leaving patients vulnerable to certain diseases.

A definitive diagnosis requires a biopsy of an affected lymph node or other involved tissue.

Doctors use a variety of scans to determine the diseases stage, or how far it has advanced. These include:

Treatment for mantle cell lymphoma varies depending on patients age and overall health and the stage of the disease. Patients who have yet to develop symptoms and who have a relatively small amount of slow-growing disease may be recommended for active surveillance close monitoring of their health through regular checkups and lab tests. When lymphoma-related symptoms appear or tests show a worsening of the disease, active treatment may begin.

The initial treatment for aggressive mantle cell lymphoma in younger patients often includes a combination of chemotherapy drugs in conjunction with an antibody-based treatment, often followed by a stem cell transplant using patients own stem cells. Older, less-fit patients may undergo less intensive chemotherapy sometimes followed by a prolonged course of antibody therapy.

Other treatments may include drugs known as BTK inhibitors such as acalbrutinib and ibrutinib, which interfere with lymphoma cells internal growth signals.

In patients who relapse after treatment or dont respond to initial treatment, a variety of options may be available, including:

Clinical trials are currently underway of CAR T-cell therapy for patients with mantle cell lymphoma. The therapy, which uses genetically modified immune system T cells to attack tumor cells, has been shown to be effective in patients with other forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Other trials are testing drugs known as bispecific antibodies, artificial proteins that can bind simultaneously to two surface proteins on cells, and targeted agents directed against specific cancer-related proteins.

The top 45 stories of the decade – ISRAEL21c

Its only been 10 years, but in that time the world has been transformed. Social media has gone from angel of democracy to demon. Climate change has become something we can see with our own eyes. All over the world, established orders have been overturned.

In Israel, new technologies like auto-tech, fintech, AI and food-tech have emerged to dominate Israels high-tech scene, while Israels food scene has come of age as you can tell by the high number of accolades to Israeli restaurants rolling in. Israeli TV has also won its fair share of praise, spurring an unexpected new area of export.

In this decade, Israel lost one of its most internationally popular leaders, Shimon Peres; but women the world over got two strong new role models Israeli actor Gal Gadot, who stormed the world with her portrayal of Wonder Woman, and Netta, who swept Eurovision with her bubbly empowerment song, Toy.

Weve looked back through our archives to discover your favorite stories. Its an extraordinary journey that charts the emergence of Israels aid industry, the move toward veganism and alternative meats, and the growth of tourism to Israel from just 1.9 million tourists to Israel in 2010, to 4m. in 2019.

Some of the technologies we wrote about went on to huge success, some pivoted, and some notably Shai Agassis Better Place went out with an almighty bang.

Take a look through the decades and remember some of the highlights of every year.

2010

An IDF doctor tends to a patient at the field hospital in Haiti, January 23, 2010. Photo courtesy Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs

One of the decades most iconic gadgets, Amazons Kindle e-reader, was largely developed in the heart of Israels high-tech center in Herzliya.

In June 2010, a professor from Bar Ilan University announced that he was developing a male contraceptive pill. His hope was that it would be out on the market within five years. While the idea created huge interest, the product ultimately never came to fruition.

Israel gained worldwide praise for the speed and efficiency with which it offered aid to Haiti in the wake of a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake that killed around 160,000 people. The field hospital set up by the Israel Defense Forces was one of the most advanced hospitals in Haiti. Five years later, Israel was still in Haiti helping rebuild the community. Haiti was the first time that the world really sat up and noticed Israeli humanitarian aid.

A breakthrough from Hadassahs Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research Center was poised to enable cultivating embryonic stem cells for treatments for disorders such as Parkinsons disease, diabetes and age-related macular degeneration. This later formed the basis for CellCure Neurosciences, currently developing OpRegen for treating dry AMD.

2011

The beaches of Tel Aviv. Photo by Shutterstock

Our top story of 2011 was on Vaxil Bio Therapeutics, which was developing a vaccine that could activate the bodys natural immune system to seek and destroy cancer cells. Since then, the company has completed a Phase I/II clinical trial in multiple myeloma patients, and is advancing toward clinical studies in additional solid tumor indications.

Yokneam-based Neuronix developed an electromagnetic stimulation system for treating moderate Alzheimers disease, allowing patients to regain faded cognitive skills. Though approved for use in Europe, Australia and Israel, in 2019 an FDA advisory panel decided that the benefits of the system did not outweigh the risks to patient health.

In June, we published a list of the 10 best beaches in Israel. Nine years later, the story continues to be one of our most popular, which for a country with as much beautiful coastline as Israels, isnt that surprising.

In May, we launched the first of a series of articles on hiking in Israel. The top 10 hikes in Israel was first, followed by water hikes, desert hikes, hikes in Jerusalem, and hikes in the Dead Sea.

2012

To celebrate Israels 64th birthday, ISRAEL21c described 64 blue-and-white innovations with the potential to transform and enrich lives across the planet.

The US developer of skyTran chose Israel as the perfect place to pilot the software-guided personal transport pods that glide on a cushion of air. While the Tel Aviv project has yet to get off the ground, additional Israeli cities including Netanya and Eilat have since signed development deals with skyTran to upgrade public transportation.

This story about groundbreaking agricultural innovations from drip irrigation to drought-proof seeds proved so popular, and so important, that we updated it in 2019.

An amazing invention that turns pet droppings into harmless, odorless powder within seconds has developed into game-changing applications for human waste-management in the United Statesand Brazil.

2013

The outright winner for story of the yearin 2013 though we could never completely understand why was our piece on 10 great reasons to love the pomegranate. Pomegranate, anyone?

In 2013, we began a new series on things to do for free in various cities around Israel. Our first story was an immediate hit and continues to be popular. We updated it earlier this year.

To celebrate Israels 65th birthday, we took a look at some of the incredible ways Israel is helping to look after our planet. Its still an impressive list.

When we reported on CartiHeal in 2013, the novel Israeli implant which provides a scaffold for the body to regenerate joint-protecting cartilage was already regarded as a major potential advance. It also featured in the top stories of 2016. Find out more below.

2014

The Iron Dome proved the unexpected hero of the 2014 war with Gaza. Photo by Shutterstock

From the Babysense baby breathing monitor to the Skysaver emergency evacuation device, this list compiled 18 potentially lifesaving technologies developed in Israel.

In 2014, the Iron Dome defense system emerged as the undisputed savior in Israel during the summer conflict with Gaza. Born out of necessity and Israeli chutzpah, the Iron Dome intercepts rockets, artillery and mortars headed for population centers. Sneak preview: Some of the prototype components were taken from a toy car.

Most of these unusual places to lay your head that we featured in this story including a yurt and a converted bus are still in business and popular with visitors looking for a different hospitality experience.

Medical devices and pharmaceuticals are a risky business and not all make it to market. But many of the exciting products anticipated in 2014 went on to successful clinical trials, such as Premia Spines TOPS alternative solution to spinal fusion surgery and CartiHeals implant for treating cartilage lesions in arthritic and non-arthritic joints.

2015

Is clean meat on the way? Photo by Shutterstock

This story exploded on the Internet, going viral within a day. It featured the work of nonprofit Modern Agriculture Foundation, which launched the worlds first feasibility study to determine how to create commercial tissue-engineered chicken breast. We featured the organization again in 2017, and it is still hard at work collaborating with academics and commercial companies to create a clean meat alternative.

We asked photographers across Israel to help us out with this gorgeous compilation of photographs to celebrate Israels 67th birthday.

3. 12 impossible ideas that Israelis turned into reality

Tell an Israeli that their idea is preposterous, and youve just given that inventor a reason to see it through. We loved this article, which highlights not only Israeli innovation, but the Israeli can-do attitude that takes an impossible idea irrigating crops in the desert, or a missile defense shield for an entire country and turns them into reality.

4. Israeli school builds cool classroom for ADHD teens

Our readers loved this story on a new classroom built at the Darca High School inKiryat Malachi, developed specially for children with attention and learning disorders. The room featured bouncy chairs made from yoga balls, walled off cubicles, desks on wheels, and a touch of the outdoor.

It is testament to just how successful and admired Israeli TV shows have become worldwide, that our most popular story of the year was about the best Israeli TV. While many Israeli shows have been remade, streaming services have opened up the original Israeli versions to viewers all over the world to great acclaim. 3. An Israeli startup is totally reinventing how cars are built

The inventors thought investors would laugh at them when they came up with the revolutionary idea of a flat modular platform, a bit like a skateboard, that houses all the cars major components, but instead they loved it. We wrote about Ree in September. The following month, the company unveiled its flat-chassis technology inside Hino Motors new FlatFormer design.

4. Could immunotherapy treatment from Israel cure cancer?

In January we ran a story on Jerusalem startup Immunovative Therapies, which is developing an immunotherapy that could potentially cure cancer. No surprises why this was popular. The company has conducted dozens of clinical trials, but its still a very long road ahead. Worth watching in future years.

5. 13 reasons you should eat like an Israeli

Large breakfasts, salad with every meal, copious amounts of vegetables and olive oil, a reliance on the Mediterranean diet its no surprise that Israel was #1 on a new ranking of countries with the lowest rate of diet-related deaths worldwide, and #10 on the 2019 Bloomberg Healthiest Country Index. In our article we took a look at the reasons why.

From cow loos to dog fitbits: 20 ways technology will transform the countryside in 2020 – Countryliving (UK)

Rural communities often take solace in the continuity associated with country life. Cities are the place for change, while our countryside is to be treasured for its slower pace. This can make the prospect of new ways of working a daunting one. But not all change is negative some technology increases productivity in farming, some benefits the environment.

Some things do need to change. The National Farmers Union (NFU) has pledged that the industry will reduce greenhouse emissions to zero by 2040, which means farmers are having to come up with eco-friendly ways to meet growing demand.

People often think of agriculture as conservative and slow to adapt, but it has always been about experimentation and trying new things, says Dr Helen Ferrier, chief science and regulatory affairs adviser at the NFU. Technology has a history of making life easier, replacing some jobs and creating new ones, adds Farmers Guardian editor Ben Briggs.

If new technologies help to make agriculture more profitable, they should be welcomed. So, let us introduce 20 innovations that could be coming to a field near you

We all want animals to live stress-free, but how do you ask a pig how its feeling? Scientists at Bristol Robotics Laboratory are using 3D scanners to find out. The machines use artificial intelligence to identify emotions on the animals faces. Farmers could eventually use similar technology to check that their pigs arent in pain or distress, thereby improving animal welfare.

Ammonia and nitrogen pollution harms more than 60% of UK land by acidifying soil and fresh water, and destroying plants. Unfortunately, cows and their bodily functions are partly to blame. But Dutch designer Henk Hanskamp might have the answer: a cow loo. Cows will pay a visit voluntarily (their daily feed given nearby as encouragement), toxins will then be removed from the waste, with the remainder used as fertiliser. The machine could be on sale in the Netherlands in 2020, before it is exported abroad.

Soon, everything and everyone in National Parks could be connected to the internet. Rubbish bins will send alerts to rangers when theyre full, so that they only have to be checked when they need emptying, reducing emissions, while sensors in footpaths will call out rangers to deal with fallen trees and flooding. Signposts at the end of a route will also be sending messages to your oven to have supper ready for when you arrive home well, we can dream, cant we?

Suffolk Punch horses, Britains oldest native breed, once happily ploughed our fields, but now they are dying out, with only about 70 breeding females left. What to do? Equine reproduction specialists Stallion AI Services has found a way to determine the gender of semen so that it can impregnate a filly with a female foal. More breeding females mean more horses in years to come

The ethics of egg-farming can make for uncomfortable reading: farmers require female chickens, as they lay the eggs, leaving the difficult question about what to do with the males. All chicks in Britain are incubated to full term, but German company Seleggt has found a way to determine the sex of a chick before it is born by testing a fluid sample from the egg. Males can then be used in animal feed before they hatch. Seleggt eggs are already sold in Germany and the company hopes to expand across Europe soon.

Meet Tom, Dick and Harry, three autonomous planters that are currently being tested in Hampshire by Waitrose & Partners; Harry plants, Tom places soil on top and Dick zaps weeds with lasers. Being smaller and lighter than tractors, these four-wheeled machines reduce compaction of the soil, improving yields. Theyre also pretty good workers. Small Robot Company CEO Ben Scott-Robinson says, People get tired, but robots dont nor do they get distracted. Robots would support rather than replace farmers, he says, adding that the technology needs further trials.

Almost half the dogs in the UK are overweight, according to vet charity PDSA. The solution? A canine activity tracker attached to your pets collar, monitoring his or her movements and how many calories they are burning. PitPat can tell you whether your dog has been playing, running or walking (39, pitpat.com), while FitBark (65, fitbark.com/store-uk) can also track your dogs sleep restless nights could indicate health problems.

A third of our wild bees and hoverflies are in decline, according to a 2019 study by the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, but help is on the way in the form of tiny bee-like drones that fly between plants and cross-pollinate them. Created by Harvard University, the solar-powered RoboBee X-Wing can flap its two sets of wings at a rate of 170 beats per second. Growers could use similar drones in greenhouses within five to 10 years.

Farms floating in harbours could make food more sustainable by reducing how far produce travels to consumers while also increasing the land available for agriculture. In Rotterdam, 32 Meuse-Rhine-Issel cows are helping to test this very notion, living on a 30m x 30m, three-storey pontoon, in a project by Dutch property company Beladon. The team is looking to expand into China and one day it could happen here

Almost a third of Britons believe well all be happily chomping away at insects by 2029, according to the Agricultural Biotechnology Council. Insects are great sources of protein, while farming them requires little space and water, and releases fewer greenhouse gases than conventional animal farms. Want a taster? Sainsburys already sells snack-sized packs of grasshoppers, crickets, buffalo worms and mealworms, produced by Eat Grub in the Netherlands (from 4.29 for 20g, also from eatgrub.co.uk), while Selfridges stocks chocolate-chip cricket cookies (5.99, in store only), produced by Bug Farm Foods in St Davids, Wales.

In New Zealand, drones are increasingly taking on sheepdog duties and farmers are now trying them over here. Mark Rutter, of Harper Adams University in Shropshire, thinks its more ethical: sheep happily follow drones, as they already lead them to food, whereas they only obey dogs because they see them as predators. Drones can also cover a fair bit of ground (about four miles), dont mind hilly terrain and wont leave muddy paw prints on the carpet. A basic model such as the DJI Mavic Pro 2 can handle winds of up to 24mph and costs roughly 1,300. Drones that work in the rain cost nearer 6,000. Farmers dont need a licence, but they should be aware of the risks, especially to birds. They also dont like to be scratched behind the ears

Sometimes it just isnt possible to cross the country to see wildlife, but now it can come to you. Webcams run by The Wildlife Trusts follow grey seals in Cumbria and puffins in Alderney, allowing you to watch them from your phone or computer (wildlifetrusts.org/webcams). Most activity takes place from the spring, but theres plenty of grass-munching year-round at The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth, Devon (thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/webcams).

Wondering where your food really comes from? Started by two farmers, new app Happerley allows you to find out where food is produced by scanning the QR code on the packaging. About 250 food and drink producers have signed up, including Simon Weaver Organic in the Cotswolds, Hayes Fruit Farm in Gloucestershire and Grass Fed Meats, which operates across the UK. Happerley is free and available on the App Store and Google Play.

New energy sources are vital as we move away from fossil fuels and grass could be a solution. In Lincolnshire, the local council, the Environment Agency and The Wildlife Trusts have been turning roadside cuttings into electricity. A tractor-like machine sucks up the grass and takes it to an anaerobic digestor, which converts it into energy. It is estimated that Lincolnshires 5,500 miles of rural roads could generate a years worth of electricity for 4,500 homes.

In the US, you can already buy burgers and meatballs made of meat grown in labs from animal stem cells, while in Europe, Netherlands-based Mosa Meat predicts its product could be in supermarkets within four years. Still hesitant? Conventional farming will continue to have a place. The NFUs Dr Helen Ferrier says lab-grown meat will simply start a useful conversation about what people want to eat.

Most of the prawns we eat in the UK come from farms in the Far East and Central America, but the future could be different. Great British Prawns, the worlds first sustainable, clean-water, land-based prawn farm, in Balfron, Stirlingshire, began harvesting a million prawns last summer, selling them to nearby chefs. The company is now planning more farms to supply restaurants across the UK.

Good news for professional gardeners and groundsmen RootWave has patented a wand-like device that zaps weeds with an electric pulse, killing them without chemicals and allowing them to decompose in the soil. The zapper is already available to commercial growers, and CEO Andrew Diprose hopes a version will eventually be available for hobby gardeners.

In 2019, there was a shortfall of 6,000 soft-fruit pickers in the UK. More robots to the rescue. Hall Hunger Farm, near Chichester, West Sussex, is trying out machines on wheels with 3D cameras and four sets of grippers. Designed by the University of Plymouths Fieldworks Robotics lab, the machines (below) are expected to go into production within a year.

Fruit and vegetables could be grown in some of the UKs 150,000 abandoned coal mine shafts, predicts Professor Saffa Riffat, president of the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technology. This would reduce the environmental costs of transporting food from far away, as well as cutting the need for pesticides. Salads grown in tunnels in south-west London are already sold through Ocado (Growing Underground, 2.59 for 70g, ocado.com).

Want to cut down on garden plastic? Bristol-based start-up Candide Labels has devised an app that identifies plants and creates virtual labels you store on your phone. Simply hold your camera-phone up to a plant and tap the screen, enabling it to identify the plant and tag it. Candide is free and available on the App Store and Google Play.

Canine Stem Cell Therapy Market To Witness Boom In Sales With The Help – Market Reports Observer

Persistence Market Research (PMR) has published a new research report on canine stem cell therapy. The report has been titled, Canine Stem Cell Therapy Market:Global Industry Analysis 2016 and Forecast 20172026.Veterinary research has been used in regenerative and adult stem cell therapy andhas gained significant traction over the last decade.

Canine stem cell therapy products are identified to have gained prominence over the past five years, and according to the aforementioned research report, the market for canine stem cell therapy will expand at a moderate pace over the next few years.

Though all animal stem cells are not approved by FDA, veterinary stem-cell manufacturers and university researchers have been adopting various strategies in order to meet regulatory approvals, and streamline and expedite the review-and-approval process.

The vendors in the market are incessantly concentrating on research and development to come up with advanced therapy, in addition to acquiring patents.

In September 2017, VetStem Biopharma, Inc. received European patent granted to the University of Pittsburgh and VetStem received full license of the patent then.

This patent will eventually provide the coverage for the ongoing commercial and product development programs of VetStem and might be also available for licensing to other companies who are rather interested in this field.

Company Profiles

According to the Persistence Market Research report, the globalcanine stem cell therapy marketis expected to witness aCAGR of 4.2%during the forecast period 2017-2026. In 2017, the market was valued atUS$ 151.4 Mnand is expected to rise to a valuation ofUS$ 218.2 Mnby the end of 2026.

Burgeoning Prevalence of Chronic Diseases in Dogs to Benefit Market

Adipose Stem Cells(ASCs) are the most prevalent and in-demand adult stem cells owing to their safety profile, ease of harvest, and use and the ability to distinguish into multiple cell lineages. Most early clinical research is focused on adipose stem cells to treat various chronic diseases such as arthritis, tendonitis, lameness, and atopic dermatitis in dogs.

A large area of focus in veterinary medicine is treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs, which becomes more prevalent with age. Globally, more than 20% dogs are suffering from arthritis, which is a common form of canine joint and musculoskeletal disease. Out of those 20%, merely 5% seem to receive the treatment.

However, elbow dysplasia in canine registered a prevalence rate of 64%, converting it into an alarming disease condition to be treated on priority. Thereby, with the growing chronic disorders in canine, the demand for stem cell therapy is increasing at a significant pace.

Expensive Nature of Therapy to Obstruct Growth Trajectory

Expensive nature and limited access to canine stem cell therapy has demonstrated to be a chief hindrance forestalling its widespread adoption.

The averagetier II and tier IIIveterinary hospitals lack the facilities and expertise to perform stem cell procedures, which necessitates the referral to a specialty vet hospital with expertise veterinarians. A trained veterinary physician charges high treatment cost associated with stem cell therapy for dogs.

Generally, dog owners have pet insurance that typically covers maximum cost associated with steam cell therapy to treat the initial injury but for the succeeding measures in case of retreatment, the costs are not covered under the pet insurance.

The stem cell therapy is thus cost-prohibitive for a large number of pet owners, which highlights a major restraint to the market growth. Stem cell therapy is still in its developmental stage and a positive growth outcome for the market cannot be confirmed yet.
