Tick season is here in Colorado: What you need to know – The Coloradoan

For two years, Michelle Case had no name for the disease that plagued her.

Seemingly overnight, the Loveland resident, wife and mother of four became a new person. Heart palpitations and muscle tremors sent her to the emergency room night after night. Chronic fatigue kept her glued to the couch. Memory loss and blurred vision made it impossible to carry out the responsibilities of her bookkeeping job.

It took about two dozen doctors, rounds and rounds of medical tests and a bottles ofunneeded medication before she learned in September 2016 that she had post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome, sometimes known as chronic Lyme disease. Cases symptoms come and go, and she worries shell never feel like herself again.

Am I just going to keep coming in and out of remission for the rest of my life? I dont know, she said. Every day is a struggle.

Lyme disease is rare in Colorado the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report no confirmed cases that originated in the state but its just one of a host of tick-borne diseases to watch out for this summer as temperatures rise and Coloradans itch to spend more time outside.

Blood-feedingticks are especially common in Colorados higher elevations. The good news: A bite from a tick in Colorado might make you want to take 10 showers, but it probably wont make you sick.

Still, one of Colorados most common tick species, the Rocky Mountain wood tick, can cause Colorado tick fever the states most common tick-borne disease or, rarely, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tick paralysis and tularemia.

Here are answers to common questions about ticks and tick-borne diseases.

How do I know if Ive got a tick-borne disease?

It depends. Colorado tick fever feels like the flu, with aches, fever, chills and fatigue. Itusually lasts about one to three days, so you might not even know you got it. About 200 cases are reported each year, but health officials believe the true count is higher.

Relapsing fever rare but not unheard of in the Estes Park area involves a quickly developing fever that quells after a few days but can snap back in multiple cycles, according to the Colorado State University Extension Office. Larimer County Health Department spokeswoman Katie ODonnell said relapsing fever is a cabin-type disease, meaning youre more likely to get it during a stay at a rodent-friendly cabin.

Larimer County saw one case of relapsing fever in 2016, O'Donnell said.

I spotted a tick on my dog. What kind of tick is it, and what should I do?

It's probably an American dog tick or a brown dog tick. Theyre pretty hard to tell apart, but brown dog ticks are much more likely to cause a nasty home infestation because they prefer the indoors.

Put a little rubbing alcohol on the bite and pluck the tickout with tweezers. Be sure to remove the biting head and the entire bodyand then take your petto the vet.

If youre unlucky enough to end up with a brown dog tick infestation in your home, youll have to get pretty aggressive to oust the suckers. That includes treating and washing any of your dog's favorite spots, vacuuming cracks along baseboards and throwing the vacuum bag far, far away.

Before you head into the great outdoors, make like a Girl/Boy Scout and protect your dog with a tick-prevention treatment.

Whats the best way to remove a tick?

Not with a match. Just like you would with your dog, grab a pair of tweezers and slowly pull out the tick at a right angle from your skin. You want to get the tweezers as close to your skin as possibleand remove the entire tick. If you have to use your fingers, at least put a tissue or other barrier between your hand and the tick.

Disinfect the area and wash your hands afterward. Go to the doctor if you start to develop symptoms in the weeks following the bite.

How do I keep a tick from biting me in the first place?

Avoid brush-filled, grassy areas on the outskirts of fields and woods. Cover up, especially your ankles, feet and legs. Use insect repellants that ward off ticks andmosquitoes. And perhaps most importantly, check yourself and your pets for ticks after youve been outdoors. Ticks can take up to 24 hours or more to camp out in a feeding spot, so youve got a little time.

Is post-treatment Lyme disease syndromea real thing?

Yes, its recognized by the CDC. According to the CDC, some people infected with Lyme disease continue to feel fatigue and pain even after treatment. When those symptoms persist for more than six months, the person might have post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome.

Case's illness is a bit of a head-scratcher because she was never treated for Lyme disease and doesn't know how she came into contact with the bacteria. The fair-skinned redhead is used to rashes, so she said she probably wouldnt have noticed the distinctive rash that comes from a Lyme-infected tick bite.

Case said dealing with her condition is tough because it has no universal cure and is often uncovered by health insurance. Doctors often dont test patients for Lyme disease unless the patient specifically requests it,Case said.

But Case is hopeful: Her 5-year-old son, born with Lyme disease, appears to no longer have the illness. A GoFundMe pagefor her family has resulted in some financial support. And next month, Case is traveling to California for experimental stem cell treatment that she hopes will result in a cure.

A new U.S. study involving mice suggests the brain's own stem cells may have the ability to restore memory after an injury. These neural stem cells work by protecting existing cells and promoting neuronal connections. In their experiments, a team at the University of California, Irvine,were able to bring the rodents' memory back to healthy levels up to three months after treatment. The finding could open new doors for treatment of brain injury, stroke and dementia, experts say.

"This is one of the first reports that you can take a stem cell transplantation approach and restore memory," said lead researcher Mathew Blurton-Jones, a postdoctorate fellow at the university. "There is a lot of awareness that stem cells might be useful in treating diseases that cause loss of motor function, but this study shows that they might benefit memory in stroke or traumatic brain injury, and potentially Alzheimer's disease."

In the study, published in the Oct. 31 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, Blurton-Jones and his colleagues used genetically engineered mice that naturally develop brain lesions. The researchers destroyed cells in a brain area called the hippocampus. These cells are known to be vital to memory formation and it is in this region that neurons often die after injury, the researchers explained. To test the mice's memory, Blurton-Jones's group conducted place and object recognition tests with both healthy mice and brain-injured mice.

Healthy mice remembered their surroundings about 70 percent of the time, while brain-injured mice remembered it only 40 percent of the time. For objects, healthy mice recalled objects about 80 percent of the time, but injured mice remembered them only 65 percent of the time. The researchers then injected each mouse with about 200,000 neural stem cells. They found that mice with brain injuries that received the stem cells now remembered their surroundings about 70 percent of the time -- the same as healthy mice. However, mice that didn't receive stem cells still had memory deficits.

The researchers also found that in healthy mice injected with stem cells, the stem cells traveled throughout the brain. In contrast, stem cells given to injured mice lingered in the hippocampus. Only about 4 percent of those stem cells became neurons, indicating that the stem cells were repairing existing cells to improve memory, rather than replacing the dead brain cells, Blurton-Jones's team noted. The researchers are presently doing another study with mice stricken with Alzheimer's. "The initial results are promising," Blurton-Jones said. "This has a huge potential, but we have to be cautious about not rushing into the clinic too early."

One expert is optimistic about the findings. "Putting in these stem cells could eventually help in age-related memory decline," said Dr. Paul R. Sanberg, director of the Center of Excellence for Aging and Brain Repair at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. "There is clearly a therapeutic potential to this." Sanberg noted that for the process to work with Alzheimer's it has to work with older brains. "There is clearly therapeutic potential in humans, but there are a lot of hurdles to overcome," he said. "This is another demonstration of the potential for neural stem cells in brain disorders.".

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo appears to have made medical history with its innovative giraffe treatments.

Mahali, a 14-year-old male giraffe who suffered from chronic lameness, is believed to be the first in the world to be injected with stem cells grown from giraffe blood, according to a news release from the zoo.

Stem cell therapy was chosen in the treatments led by Dr. Liza Dadone, the zoo's head veterinarian, because it has proven to repair damaged tissue. Staff at Colorado State University's James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Fort Collins helped with the treatment.

Nearly a month after the procedure, when Mahali was injected with about 100 million stem cells, thermographic images of the giraffe's front legs show "a considerable decline" in inflammation in his front left leg, the leg that had been giving him trouble, the zoo said.

"This is meaningful to us not only because it is the first time a giraffe has been treated with stem cells, but especially because it is bringing Mahali some arthritis relief and could help other giraffes in the near future," Dadone said in a written statement.

Dadone said it's not clear whether the successful results are due only to the stem cell treatment or a combination of treatments.

"Prior to the procedure, he was favoring his left front leg and would lift that foot off the ground almost once per minute," she said in the statement. "During the immobilization, we did multiple treatments that included hoof trims, stem cell therapy and other medications. "Since then, Mahali is no longer constantly lifting his left front leg off the ground and has resumed cooperating for hoof care. A few weeks ago, he returned to life with his herd, including yard access. On the thermogram, the marked inflammation up the leg has mostly resolved."

"We've had Twiga on medicine to help reverse her osteoporosis, but we wanted to do more to protect her feet. So with the help of the farriers, we gave her 'giraffe sneakers' to help give her some extra cushion," Dadone said in a written statement.

The giraffe's behavior was immediately changed - "Twiga instantly shifted her weight off of her right foot, indicating she was comfortable and her pain had considerably lessened" - but she will likely wear the shoes for about six more weeks, the zoo said.

Giraffes' size can make them more susceptible to issues like arthritis and osteoporosis. "Like all animals, these issues are exacerbated as they age," according to the zoo news release.

The zoo has a herd of 17 giraffes, including a newborn in April. The calf, a girl, was the 199th to be born in the 63-year history of the zoo's breeding program.

Giraffes' status was recently changed from "least concern" to "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature because the population in the wild has decreased by 40 percent in the last 30 years, the zoo said.

CAR-T Cells from Creative Biolabs Help in the Treatment of Advanced Malignant Lymphoma – Digital Journal

Recently, a hospital used the world's most advanced cell immunotherapy (CAR-T) treatment to treat a patient with advanced malignant lymphoma. Two months after transfusion, most of the patient's body mass disappeared, and relevant indicators returned to normal, marking the success of treatment.

The patient was diagnosed two years ago with the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (non-germinal center origin, ). She had been given multiple R-CHOP, EPOCH, MINE, GDP, DICE, CHOPE and other first-line or second-line chemotherapy, but the condition control is not ideal. PET-CT showed that on tonsil, bilateral neck, supraclavicular area, bilateral axillary, hilar, mediastinal, retroperitoneal area, pelvic and bilateral inguinal, there were multiple lymph nodes. Two months ago, the patient received autologous CD19 CAR-T cells, and a lighter cytokine storm appeared after transfusion. Two months of transfused cells, PET-CT showed that multiple mass had disappeared, and the patient reached a complete remission.

Lymphoma is a common type of malignant blood tumor, and diffuse large mature B-cell neoplasms are the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Conventional chemotherapy can make about 50% of patients with lymphoma get long-term survival. New drugs in recent years, such as anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody, improved the prognosis of some patients with poor prognosis. But some patients with poor efficacy of chemotherapy is easy to relapse even if the application of autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is used. CAR-T technology is currently the world's latest tumor treatment technology. The existing data confirms that CAR-T has a good effect for a variety of refractory and recurrent hematological malignancies, such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, etc. Approximately 40-80% of refractory and recurrent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients receive efficacy after receiving CAR-T treatment.

TARPON SPRINGS (FOX 13) - Brian Cirillo is concerned about his 4-year-old dog, Cosby's health. Brian and his wife are self-proclaimed suckers for homeless pets and have six adopted dogs.

"He's always the last one to kind of get moving and if he's laying down for a long time he takes a long time to stand up," Brian explained. "He's the only one that's so scared of everything and I'm starting to wonder now if it's because he's in pain."

To diagnose the problem Cosby got a physical exam, x-rays, and blood tests. There's a possibility Cosby could also qualify to get an injection of experimental stem cells into his joint.

"We're looking at taking the miraculous healing capabilities of the body, concentrating it, and then bringing it back to the body and we're not seeing a lot of side effects," veterinarian Dr. Michael Amsberry said.

He owns the St. Francis Pet Care Center. It's one of several sites across the country taking part in a clinical trial testing whether specially-grown stem cells made by animal cell therapies in San Diego, will help arthritis symptoms in dogs.

"Specifically this study is knees, hips, elbows and shoulders, but the most common is hips," he explained.

The cells are grown from umbilical cord blood.

"What they've done is harvested little umbilical cords from C-sections from dogs and they isolate these cells," Dr. Amsberry described. When the cells grow up, researchers are able to culture them into hundreds of millions of cells. This means one sample can treat thousands of dogs. The treatment is free and Dr. Amsberry says he's injected eight dogs so far.

It's an experimental option Brian hopes will work for Cosby.

"If we can try to get ahead of the problem with stem cells and actually cure the problem and he doesn't have to be on a lot of chemicals and medicines his whole life, that would be great," he said.
